Personal Quotes
[On following his own gut in career choices]: I was 18, did a couple
of things on TV, then I did Ordinary People (1980)
and when you are fortunate enough to be in a movie like that, working
with Robert Redford as
the director and the movie is as well received as it was, it would be
ludicrous to have a master plan for a career. So next, I was in Wayne,
PA doing Taps (1981)
and then I was back in New York working with Sidney Lumet doing an
ensemble movie called Daniel
(1983). And I turned down a starring role in Risky Business (1983),
even though all my agents and manager said I was crazy. But I looked at
it and asked myself, "What was the experience going to be like? What
will I learn?" And looking back at myself at 23, being able to work with
Sidney Lumet and E.L.
Doctorow, I have absolutely no regrets. I learned stuff that will
stay with me forever. (Timothy Hutton in DAILY NEWS, September 13, 1998)
[Upon
receiving his Academy Award for Ordinary People (1980)]:
This is for my dad. I wish he were here to see it.
[on George C.
Scott] It was amazing just to stand by him and see him at work on "Taps"
-- a real experience to see such discipline and concentration.
CHARACTER BACKGROUND: NATE FORD
Former insurance fraud investigator for
IYS Insurance and the team's mastermind. The son of South Boston numbers
runner Jimmy Ford,[5]
Nate originally intended to become a Catholic priest, spending a short
period in seminary prior to becoming an insurance
investigator. While working for IYS, Nate's young son became seriously
ill; IYS refused to pay for the experimental treatment needed, resulting
in his death. The aftermath leads to Nate's drinking, his divorce from
his wife Maggie, and his subsequent dismissal from the company. Nate is
at first a very likable and talkative man, but is unwilling to talk
about his own problems, even becoming quick to anger anytime the subject
changes to his son's death. A skilled planner, Nate draws on his
experience as an insurance investigator to anticipate the moves of his
team's marks. Nate is incredibly protective of his team and will go to
any lengths to keep them safe and help the client, going so far as to
take the fall in place of the team and go to jail. At times Nate's
drinking has interfered with the team, sometimes causing him to push a
job too far or reach beyond the original goal. This has on occasion put
the client and the team at risk, sometimes straining his relationship
with his team. Throughout the second season Nate grappled with his
identity of using illegal means for good reasons, vehemently swearing he
was not a thief. This in part contributed with his tension with Sophie,
and it was not until the second season finale that Nate finally openly
admitted that he was a thief. Nate has the privilege of selecting what
client the team will help, and he often acts as their direct liaison to
the team.
